Device Review: Zebra HC20 / HC50

The healthcare industry demands tools that are reliable, efficient, and durable. Zebra, a leader in enterprise-grade devices, has introduced two solutions specifically tailored for healthcare: the HC20 and HC50. These devices are healthcare-specific versions of Zebra’s popular Android handheld series, and today, I’m diving into a detailed review of their form, function, and performance.

First Impressions: Built for Healthcare

At first glance, the HC20 and HC50 remind me of Zebra’s TC52/TC53 series, but several key design updates stand out, making them perfect for healthcare environments:

  1. Finish:
The HC20 and HC50 feature a unique plastic finish specifically designed for the healthcare industry. This material is resistant to harsh cleaning agents commonly used in healthcare settings. Fewer seams in the design reduce potential collection points for bacteria, enhancing the devices’ hygienic usability compared to standard Zebra models.

  2. Sealed Port:
A sealed port at the bottom of the devices minimizes exposure to cleaning chemicals. For those who need access to the USB port, the protective boot is removable.

  3. Emergency Call Button:
Both models include a programmable emergency call button on the back. This feature can be customized for immediate assistance, a vital function for healthcare professionals relying on communication tools during emergencies.

Performance: Solid and Reliable

Performance is critical in healthcare environments, and both the HC20 and HC50 deliver responsive operation.

  • Benchmark Testing:
On Basemark’s web benchmark running Chrome, the HC20 scored 351, while the HC50 scored 395. While these results place them approximately 25–30% slower than the TC53 (Zebra’s top-tier performance handheld), in real-world usage, the devices performed flawlessly. Apps, including BlueFletch’s software, ran smoothly with no noticeable lag.

Specifications: Power and Practicality

The HC20 and HC50 pack a range of robust features to meet the demands of healthcare professionals:

Operating System:
Both devices run Android 13 and are upgradable to Android 16, ensuring long-term support and compatibility.

Processor:
Powered by Qualcomm® 5430 hex-core CPUs, the devices balance performance and efficiency.

Memory and Storage:

  • HC20: 6GB RAM, 64GB storage.
  • HC50: 8GB RAM, 128GB storage.

Battery:
With options for a 4680mAh or 7000mAh removable battery, both devices can support healthcare workers through an 8-hour shift. Batteries are hot-swappable, ensuring uninterrupted operations.

NFC:
NFC functionality is responsive, with the touchpoint conveniently located on the backside of the devices.

Cameras:

  • Front Camera (HC50): A 5MP front-facing camera supports video calls, making it the go-to device for telemedicine applications.
  • Rear Camera: Both models include a 16MP rear camera, ideal for capturing clear documentation and other healthcare-related imaging needs.

Scanning:

  • The HC50 I tested featured Zebra’s SE4720 scanner, a reliable tool for scanning barcodes.
  • The HC20 lacks an integrated scanner but compensates with responsive camera-based barcode scanning.

Final Thoughts: Designed with Healthcare in Mind

Zebra’s HC20 and HC50 stand out as purpose-built devices for healthcare teams. Here’s a quick summary of their key strengths:

  • Durable, hygienic design: Engineered for healthcare environments with a finish resistant to cleaning chemicals and minimal seams.
  • Customizable emergency button: A crucial addition for quick access to assistance.
  • Reliable performance: While not the fastest in Zebra’s lineup, they are more than capable of handling demanding healthcare applications.
  • Versatile features: From removable batteries to high-quality cameras, these devices meet a variety of healthcare needs.

Whether you’re looking to improve communication, streamline workflows, or enhance patient care, the Zebra HC20 and HC50 are reliable tools to consider.
